Watch out for the classic mix-up
Marking your costs up by 20% does not give you a 20% margin, but 16.7%. That gap is what quietly puts contractors in the red.
Stop redoing this math by hand
ORYX prices your quotes, applies Quebec taxes and turns them into an invoice without retyping anything.
Why your markup is not your margin
This is the most common mistake in quoting, and the most expensive one. If a job costs you $1,000 and you mark it up 20%, you invoice $1,200. Your profit is $200, but on a $1,200 selling price that is a 16.7% margin, not 20%.
The gap looks small on one job. Across a full year it is often the difference between a business that breathes and one that chases its own receivables. The calculator shows both numbers side by side so you know exactly where you stand.
The taxes to apply in Quebec
On a taxable good or service you charge GST at 5% and QST at 9.975%, for 14.975% in total. Since 2013 QST is calculated on the amount before GST, so there is no longer tax on tax: your pre-tax amount multiplied by 1.14975 gives the total.
