Quebec sales tax calculator 2026 GST and QST Calculator for Quebec

In short

In Quebec, the GST is 5% and the QST is 9.975%, both calculated on the pre-tax price: 14.975% in all. The QST is not calculated on the GST.

To get the pre-tax amount from a total, work out the taxes it contains: GST = total × 5 ÷ 114.975 and QST = total × 9.975 ÷ 114.975, each rounded to the cent. The pre-tax amount is the total minus those two taxes. The calculator below works both ways.

GST and QST calculator

You know:

Example: 1,804.00. The result updates as you type.

Result

Pre-tax amount
$1,000.00
GST (5%)
$50.00
QST (9.975%)
$99.75
Tax-included total
$1,149.75

$1,000.00 before tax comes to $1,149.75 with tax.

The Excel formula

Put the pre-tax amount in cell A1: this formula gives the tax-included total.

=A1+ROUND(A1*5%,2)+ROUND(A1*9.975%,2)

GST only: =ROUND(A1*5%,2) · QST only: =ROUND(A1*9.975%,2)

French-language Excel: ARRONDI instead of ROUND. Separators follow your computer's regional settings, not Excel's language: with a decimal comma, type 9,975% and 114,975, and separate arguments with semicolons instead of commas.

The calculation runs in your browser: the amount you enter isn't sent anywhere.

Calculated by the calculator on this page: each tax rounded to the cent, fractions of $0.005 or more rounded up.

How it's calculated

The calculator applies the rates and the rounding rule published by Revenu Québec, in whole cents to avoid spreadsheet rounding errors.

  • GST = pre-tax amount × 5%, rounded to the cent.
  • QST = pre-tax amount × 9.975%, rounded to the cent. It is not calculated on the GST.
  • Total = pre-tax amount + GST + QST.
  • Reverse calculation: GST = total × 5 ÷ 114.975 and QST = total × 9.975 ÷ 114.975, each rounded to the cent; pre-tax amount = total − GST − QST. Dividing the total by 1.14975 can be off by a cent.

Rounding: only fractions of $0.005 or more go up to the next cent. A QST of $9.975 becomes $9.98; a QST of $9.974 becomes $9.97.

Several items on the same sale: Revenu Québec lets you calculate the GST and QST on the total price before rounding.

Why the result can be off by one cent

One step or two. Revenu Québec describes two ways to calculate: in two steps (the GST, then the QST, each rounded) or in one step (14.975% at once, rounded once). The calculator uses the two-step calculation, which gives the GST and QST separately. On $100.07, two steps give a total of $115.05, one step $115.06.

The reverse calculation. Because each tax is rounded, some totals match no pre-tax amount. For example, $87.06 gives a total of $100.09 and $87.07 a total of $100.11: no amount gives exactly $100.10. The calculator tells you and shows the two closest amounts.

The Quick Method

According to Revenu Québec, the Quick Method is a simplified way to calculate the net GST and QST to remit: you still collect the taxes the usual way.

Frequently asked questions

First work out the taxes included in the total: GST = total × 5 ÷ 114.975 and QST = total × 9.975 ÷ 114.975, each rounded to the cent. The pre-tax amount is the total minus those two taxes. For example, on $1,000.00: $43.49 of GST and $86.76 of QST, so $869.75 before tax.

Multiply the total by 5 ÷ 114.975 for the GST and by 9.975 ÷ 114.975 for the QST, each tax rounded to the cent; the pre-tax amount is what's left. On a total of $114.98, the GST is $5.00 and the QST is $9.98: the pre-tax amount is $100.00.

Put the pre-tax amount in cell A1. GST: =ROUND(A1*5%,2). QST: =ROUND(A1*9.975%,2). Total: =A1+ROUND(A1*5%,2)+ROUND(A1*9.975%,2). For the reverse calculation, put the total in A1: =A1-ROUND(A1*5/114.975,2)-ROUND(A1*9.975/114.975,2). In French-language Excel, ROUND becomes ARRONDI. Separators follow your computer's regional settings: with a decimal comma, type 9,975% and 114,975, and use semicolons instead of commas, for example =A1+ARRONDI(A1*5%;2)+ARRONDI(A1*9,975%;2).

No. Revenu Québec states that the QST is calculated at 9.975% on the selling price excluding the GST. Both taxes are therefore calculated on the same pre-tax amount. According to Revenu Québec's table of rates, the 9.975% rate has applied since January 1, 2013.

Because each tax is rounded to the cent. Revenu Québec describes two ways to calculate: in two steps (the GST, then the QST, each rounded) or in one step (14.975% at once). On $100.07, the first gives $115.05 and the second $115.06. Either way, only fractions of $0.005 or more are rounded up to the next cent.
