Hours worked calculator Work hours calculator (hours and minutes to decimal)

In short

Hours worked = end − start − unpaid breaks. Do the math in minutes, add up the week, then convert the total to decimal hours: minutes ÷ 60.

15 minutes is 0.25 h, 30 minutes is 0.50 h and 45 minutes is 0.75 h. A shift that runs past midnight counts into the next day: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. is 8 h.

Total: 37 h 40 min, or 37.67 h in decimal. Days worked: 5.

Convert hours and minutes to decimal

For payroll or an hourly invoice, most software asks for decimal hours. The conversion works both ways.

Examples: 7:45, 7 h 45, 45 min, 37:30.

7 h 45 min = 7.75 h

Examples: 7.75 or 7,75.

7.75 h = 7 h 45 min

The math happens in your browser: the hours you enter are not sent anywhere and are not kept.

Divide the minutes by 60 and round to the hundredth. The values people look up most:

How to calculate hours worked

  1. For each day, subtract the start time from the end time. From 7:00 to 15:30, that is 8 h 30 min.
  2. Take off unpaid breaks. With a 30-minute meal break, 8 h remain.
  3. Add up the days in hours and minutes, not in decimals that were already rounded.
  4. Convert the week total: minutes ÷ 60. 37 h 40 min gives 37 + 40 ÷ 60 = 37.67 h.

Which breaks to take off?

  • According to the CNESST, breaks granted by the employer are paid: they count as hours worked. Do not take them off.
  • The 30-minute meal break, granted after 5 consecutive hours of work, is unpaid, unless the person must stay at their workstation. That is usually the one you take off.
  • A collective agreement or a decree may provide otherwise for the meal period (Act respecting labour standards, s. 79).
  • In construction, an employee governed by Act R-20 is not covered by these rules of the Act respecting labour standards (s. 3): the collective agreement of their sector applies instead.

A shift that runs past midnight

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift ended the next day: add 24 h to the end time. From 22:00 to 6:00: (6 + 24) − 22 = 8 h. The calculator does it on its own and flags it as "past midnight".

Why add up before converting

Decimal hours are often rounded. Three 10-minute periods give 0.17 + 0.17 + 0.17 = 0.51 h if you round each one, while 30 minutes is exactly 0.50 h. The calculator adds up the minutes, then converts the total.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 0.25 h, 30 minutes = 0.50 h, 45 minutes = 0.75 h, 20 minutes = 0.33 h. For 7 h 45 min: 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 h.

Add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting the start time. From 23:00 to 7:00: (7 + 24) − 23 = 8 h. The calculator does it on its own.

Only unpaid breaks. According to the CNESST, breaks granted by the employer are paid and count as hours worked. The 30-minute meal break after 5 consecutive hours is unpaid, unless the person must stay at their workstation. In construction, an employee governed by Act R-20 follows the collective agreement of their sector instead.

8 h 20 min = 8 + 20 ÷ 60 = 8.33 h, rounded to the hundredth. The other way, 8.33 h × 60 gives about 500 minutes, or 8 h 20 min.

No. The math happens in your browser: nothing is sent or kept. If you close the page, the hours are gone.
